Music Education-Vocal Gr K-12, P.B.C.

In addition to the Certification-Only Program requirements, you must pass all required courses, pass the Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT): Grades K-6 (5622), the Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT): Grades 5-9 (5623), or the Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT): Grades 7-12 (5624), and successfully complete an Academic Internship or a Teacher Internship to receive certification from the Louisiana Department of Education.

Pre-requisite Requirements

Candidates enrolling into Vocal Music Education must meet all of the following music requisite requirements prior to acceptance into the program:

  • Music Theory: Music Theory II or equivalency exam
  • Keyboard Skills: Piano II or equivalency exam
  • Vocal: Audition passed at level of a barrier exam
  • Ensemble Experience: highly recommended for major instrument 

Course Requirements

Professional Education (27 hours + 6 credits of Academic Internship or Teacher Internship)

NOTE: No final grade below “C” accepted for any professional education or specialized academic education course required for this certification. Any course substitutions must be approved by the Office of Student Services.

*EDCI 450 and READ 409 provide 80 "classroom readiness" hours and must be completed before official acceptance into this program.

Academic Internship or Teacher Internship 

In addition to coursework, you must complete 6 credit hours of either an academic internship or teacher internship as part of the Certification-Only Program requirements.

  • EDCI 485: Internship for Alternate Certification Candidates I
  • EDCI 487: Internship for Alternate Certification Candidates II

However, you do not have to complete an academic internship or a teacher internship (student teaching) if you have accumulated three years of successful experience in an approved Louisiana school in the area(s) of certification. Your three years of teaching experience can be used by the Louisiana Department of Education in lieu of the academic internship or student teaching portion of the program. Experience accumulated by elementary education certification candidates must be in core content areas at appropriate grade levels. The Office of Teacher Clinical Experiences (OTCE) will verify that you have been teaching for at least 3 years in the area you are seeking certification.

NOTE: The Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) (5622, 5623, or 5624) and all course work listed must be passed prior to registering for an Academic Internship (2-semester Internship) or a Teacher Internship (Student Teaching). NOTE: Candidates are required to complete student teaching assignments in both an elementary school setting and a secondary (middle or high) school setting.

Academic Internship (2-semester Internship)

If the Louisiana Department of Education issued you a Practitioner’s License 2 (PL2) and you have 0-2 years of teaching experience in your certification area, you may be eligible for an academic internship. The academic internship begins only in the fall semester and is one full school year, or two semesters. Candidates are required to register for EDCI 485 (3 cr. hrs.) in the fall semester and EDCI 487 (3 cr. hrs.) in the spring semester.

The approval to enroll for an Academic Internship will be given by the Director of the Office of Teacher Clinical Experiences. Upon approval, it is your responsibility to register for the appropriate course and pay the fees for the required course.

To enroll in an Academic Internship, you must meet the following requirements in addition to the requirements for admission into the Certification-Only Program:

  • You must submit a copy of the contract from the school system in which you are teaching, or you must submit a letter (on school letterhead) from the principal verifying at least one year of full-time employment relevant to your certification area during enrollment in the program. NOTE: The letter from the principal must specifically state the subject area and grade level you are currently teaching. Once the documentation provided has been verified, the Office of Teacher Clinical Experiences will send an assigned university supervisor at least 4-5 times to the school where you are teaching to evaluate your teaching during the academic internship.
  • You must submit a copy of your current teaching schedule.
  • You must submit copies of your passing scores for the Praxis Series Test-the Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT).
  • You must pass all courses required by the prescription with a "C" or better.
  • You must have at least a 2.5 overall cumulative grade point average.
  • Your Portal III Review must be completed and locked.
  • You must submit a fully completed the Academic Internship Application packet to the Office of Teacher Clinical Experiences.

Teacher Internship (Student Teaching)

You must complete a teacher internship (Student Teaching) if the Louisiana Department of Education did not issue you a Practitioner’s License (PL2) and you currently do not have a teaching job. The teacher internship is one semester and consists of two 3 credit hour courses, EDCI 485 and EDCI 487.

The approval to enroll for an Academic Internship will be given by the Director of the Office of Teacher Clinical Experiences. Upon approval, it is your responsibility to register for the appropriate course and pay the fees for the required courses.

The Director of the Office of Teacher Clinical Experiences will assign you to a school based on your certification area. Candidates will student teach under the supervision of the cooperating teacher at the assigned school. In addition, the Director of the Office of Teacher Clinical Experiences will send an assigned university supervisor to the school to evaluate your teaching.

To enroll in a Teacher Internship, you must meet the following requirements in addition to the requirements for admission into the Certification-Only Program:

  • You must submit copies of your passing scores for the Praxis Series Test-the Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT).
  • You must pass all courses required by the prescription with a "C" or better.
  • You must have at least a 2.5 overall cumulative grade point average.
  • Your Portal III Review must be completed and locked.
  • You must submit proof of affiliation with a professional educational organization offering education liability insurance, such as A+PEL, LAE, LAHPERD, Kappa Delta Pi, etc. Visit Organizations and Associations for more information.
  • You must submit a fully completed Teacher Internship Application packet to the Office of Teacher Clinical Experiences.

NOTE: All candidates seeking teacher certification in Music Education are required to complete student teaching assignments in both an elementary school setting and a secondary (middle or high) school setting.
